Hello Daily Limerick readers. Unfortunately the flu has arrived and your favorite poets spent their evening at urgent care rather than writing a limerick. So, we thought we’d pull a timely limerick from our vaults. This one titled “From Sesame Street to Pennsylvania Ave“ appeared on September 5th, enjoy!
As summer ends and fall begins the time of year known as “flu season” is quickly approaching. With the recent outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus, commonly known as Swine Flu, the U.S. Government is working hard to educate the public. The elderly, ill, and children are especially susceptible to the illness. In an attempt to teach children good hygiene such as sneezing into the bend of their arm and frequently washing hands, the government partnered with famous Sesame Street character, Elmo. The ads were originally aired in May 2009 but they have now been redesigned to promote the government’s flu website, www.flu.gov.

New boxes of Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies, boast that eating that sugary cereal will boost your child’s immunity. Playing on parents fears of swine flu and other communicable diseases has not gone over well so far. Recently the city of San Francisco sent a letter to the FDA asking that the claim be proven. Kellogg’s states that by increasing the amount of vitamins A, C, & E from 10% of daily value to 25%; they have boosted immunity. Experts from Yale and NYU have both disputed these claims. It was less than 6 months ago that Kellogg’s was forced to remove unsubstantiated claims from their Mini-Wheats advertisements.

Fearing further expansion of the Swine Flu (H1N1 Flu) President Barack Obama asked Congress last week for $1.5 billion to help combat the outbreak. The idea behind the request is to give the government “maximum flexibility” to supplement antiviral stockpiles, add medical equipment and prepare for a vaccine.

On NBC’s Today show, Vice President Joe Biden stated that, due to the Swine Flu, he would avoid all confined spaces such as airplanes and subway cars. To clarify his stance, he stated, “It’s not that it’s going to Mexico. It’s [that] you’re in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft.” Since this is quite a different stance than the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have stated, a White House spokesperson was quick to issue an apology. Since Biden joined the Obama ticket, he has made several off-the-cuff remarks for which he quickly apologized or clarified.
