One day before the anniversary of President Obama’s swearing in he and the Democrats were dealt a major blow to the governmental stronghold they possessed. In a special election to fill the senate seat left open by the late Ted Kennedy, underdog Republican Scott Brown, won the seat. It is the first time in thirty years that Massachusetts has had a Republican Senator. This comes amidst news that Obama’s approval rating is the second lowest of any president post WWII entering his second year. That is a big drop from one year ago at his inauguration where he was close to 70% approval.

Rudy Giuliani made a statement that has set off a real firestorm in the media. On ABC’s Good Morning America, he criticized President Obama by stating that our nation “had no domestic attacks” under President George W. Bush and “We’ve had one under Obama.” That of course, is not true – the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon occurred on September 11, 2001 when Bush was in office. Of all people, those events should come to mind immediately for Giuliani since he was the mayor of New York City at the time and his handling of the situation brought him to international prominence. In a later interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, he clarified his statement saying, “I did omit the words ’since Sept. 11.’ I apologize for that”

President Obama is obviously not a fan of ABC’s drama LOST. He suggested moving the State of the Union address to February 2nd. As any fan of the very popular show can tell you; that is the premier episode of the final season. After learning that, the February date was scratched but no new date has been set. LOST, which follows the fate of airline passengers that crash on an island with mystical powers, including the ability to shift time, premiered in 2004.

On Monday, August 10, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared at a town hall-style meeting while on an official visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A student in the audience asked Clinton to comment on the opinion of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, about a loan offer from the Chinese to the Congo. Clinton’s irritation was clear when she answered, “My husband is not the Secretary of State. I am.” Reports following the meeting indicate the student approached Clinton and told her that he meant to ask President Obama’s opinion. Various websites and news articles have suggested that Clinton, our nation’s top diplomat, continues to feel in the shadow of the former President, particularly after recently negotiating the release of two American citizens from North Korea.

Does it feel to you like President Obama is always on television? That is certainly how Deloris Nissen of Carroll, Iowa feels. She recently placed a classified ad stating that she is selling 2 television sets because Obama is on every channel and station. As she put it, “I just got tired of watching him on every channel. I thought, my gosh, does he ever stay at the White House?” She does appear to be in the minority in her area because Obama did win her county and state in the 2008 election.

Over the past several days Democratic legislators have hosted town hall meetings to discuss President Obama’s health care proposal. Several of these meetings have been interrupted by angry protestors that have shouted over the speaker. In response, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) created a video alleging Republicans organized the angry mobs. At the video’s conclusion, the DNC encourages viewers to call the Republican National Committee (RNC) to voice their displeasure. On Thursday, August 6, 2009, Judge Sonia Sotomayor made history as the first Hispanic person to be appointed to the Supreme Court. She was confirmed 68 – 31 with nine Republicans joining the unanimous Democratic vote. After her selection by President Obama in late May, Sotomayor’s earlier statement of being a “wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences” caused critics to portray her as an activist judge. In contrast, through the confirmation process Sotomayor provided “purposely bland testimony, her determination to . . . say practically nothing” and when presented with hot topic issues, consistently stated she could not voice her opinion without the facts of the case. The 55-year-old Bronx-born Sotomayor will be sworn in as the eleventh Justice by Chief Justice John Roberts on Saturday.

Prior to Tuesday evening’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, President Obama is scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch. This is a notable occasion as the last sitting president to throw out the first pitch was Gerald Ford in 1976. The pre-game ceremony also pays tribute to “All-Stars Among Us,” 30 people being honored for their public service. Tim Brosnan, MLB Executive Vice President for Business, commented these vignettes were inspired by Obama’s calls to action. There could also be the opportunity for Obama to visit Joe Buck and Tim McCarver in the broadcast booth during the game.

As part of President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus plan, states will soon begin receiving funds to improve local roadways and bridges. This comes as welcome news to many states who expected to have to cut their construction spending by nearly half. However, much of this work will begin just as the summer travel season gears up. With the anticipation that gas prices will be lower than last summer, more drivers are expected to be on the roads and this, combined with the road construction will lead to the inevitable traffic jam.
