American’s love their entertainers – from movies, to television, to music, and sports – and every once in a while one comes along that is so outrageous and bent on attention, they just can’t be ignored. The Cincinnati Bengals have such a personality in the player formerly known as Chad Johnson. He is known for odd hairstyles, excessive celebrations on the field, and other envelope pushing actions that bring financial penalties and the ire of the NFL commissioner. In 2006, he took things even further. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, Johnson, who is black, changed his last name to Ochocinco to reflect the numbers on his jersey, eight five. He meant for the name to be Ocho Cinco but he forgot to put in the space when he filled out the legal paperwork. Now, in 2009, he is at it again. In the upcoming off season, he states he is going to change his name to Chad Hachi Go in honor of his Japanese fan base (again meaning eight five). It will be interesting to see how the NFL handles this since it affects sales of athletic wear and contracts with those manufacturers.

In a recent interview with Q Magazine, Paul McCartney remarked his marriage to Heather Mills was “a prime contender” for being one of his worst mistakes in the last decade. The former Beatle met Mills at the Pride of Britain Awards ceremony in 1999 where they each were a presenter. The two married on June 11, 2002 and their daughter, Beatrice, was born in 2003. During their marriage, Mills was unhappy with the remote location of McCartney’s residence and referred to him as “a boring old fart.” During the divorce proceeding, Mills’ testimony of a difficult life with McCartney was contradicted by her own accounts of a happy marriage from her book Life Balance: The Essential Keys to a Lifetime of Wellbeing. When the divorce was finalized in 2008, the Justice presiding over the case described Mills as an “unimpressive witness” and that her evidence was “not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid.” Mills, who uses a prosthetic leg after losing hers in a 1993 accident, appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2007. She remains active in several charities including the Heather Mills Health Trust and the Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation.

We’ve all heard of Frosty the Snowman, but have you heard about Frosty the Inappropriate Snowman? Well, this new version of the classic tale was created by CBS Television to promote its adult-themed comedy, How I met your Mother. While the video did not air on broadcast television, it aired on their official website until public outcry made them remove it. However, in this digital world it continues to live on YouTube and blogs around the world. The video overdubs Frosty’s voice with that of the characters of Mother – most notably Neil Patrick Harris who plays the skirt chasing scoundrel Barney Stinson. Barney is known for his catchphrase “legendary” and quite often (for dramatic effect) stretches it out to be “legen……wait for it……DARY!”

The United States Mint, in an effort to get more $1 coins into circulation made a very unique offer – free shipping. Since the pieces are legal tender and not collectibles they (by law) were sold at face value. The idea was to help car washes, banks, vending machine companies, and the like, easily obtain the coins and put them in circulation. However, some people who could be labeled as frequent flyer mile fanatics learned of the program and used it for their own gain. The plan was simple and spread quickly through chat rooms: buy the coins with a credit card that earns frequent flyer miles, deposit the coins into your bank account as soon as they arrive, write a check to the credit card company. And violá, you have free frequent flyer miles! One man claims to have used multiple cards and banks to put him over the two million mile mark for American Airlines providing him platinum-elite status for life. Others earned trips to Tahiti or simple hotel stays.

Gangsta rapper Tupac Shakur has written songs about killing police, lived by the philosophy of the “Thug Life,” was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexual abuse, was convicted of assaulting Hollywood director Allen Hughes, and he spurred the East Coast-West Coast Rap Rivalry. Now he can add one more thing to his resume – he is just one of nine artists on Pope Benedict XVI’s MySpace Playlist. The playlist also contains artists Nour Eddine, Mozart, Muse, and Fleet Foxes and a description on the page states, “This playlist is a perfect mix of classical, world and contemporary music.” The Shakur song chosen is Changes which is said to be a song about self-improvement but you can read the lyrics here and decide for yourself.

Down on her luck from a recent separation, fewer work hours, and moving into an apartment, Mary Jo Coady needed some kind of pick-me-up. It appeared in the most unlikely of places – the bottom of her iron. That is where she found brown residue that she believes is the likeness of Jesus Christ. Unlike previous people who have believed to find religious symbols in unusual places, Coady does not plan to sell the item. She will store it in a closet and buy another iron for daily use.

In the United States, the day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday”. It is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season. It achieved its name because for many retailers it marks the time of the year that they go from a loss (in the red) to a profit (in the black). To maximize the day, stores open extraordinarily early and a rare few remain open for 24 hours. The earliest shoppers get the best deals on desirable items that are in strict limited quantity (called doorbusters). Unfortunately, some people take that term very literally and press up against the doors in an effort to be the first in. This “mob mentality” has caused some tragic accidents in recent years. In 2008, an employee at a Long Island, NY Wal-Mart was trampled to death when the crowd took the doors off their hinges and rushed inside.

The 2009 American Music Awards (AMA) aired on Sunday, November 22 to honor some of music’s greats. As is the tradition, awards were interspersed with performances by popular acts. In his first AMA appearance, Adam Lambert, sparked immediate controversy with a performance containing simulated male-on-male sex and a long kiss with a bandmate. Lambert, the most recent runner-up on the TV show American Idol and first openly gay contestant, was scheduled to perform on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, November 25th. However, the appearance was canceled because executives were concerned about “airing a similar concert so early in the morning.” The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), has released a statement about this.
