Standing on the gallows for up to an hour with a noose around your neck, 39 lashes, and up to a year in jail or a 100 pound fine – that was the punishment of being an adulterer in New Hampshire years ago. As odd as it may seem, the law still stands, but in a more relaxed manner. Today it will only garner you a misdemeanor and a $1,200 fine. However, some find it odd that the law exists at all and believe the government should remove itself from people’s bedrooms entirely. The law has been put up for repeal several times since 1987 but the state senate would not allow it to pass. Some conservatives, like Kevin Smith, feel that removing the law would weaken marriage.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday when retailers make big sales and turn big profits. However, in South Carolina they are dubbing it, “Second Amendment Weekend” and (for two days) waive the tax on the sale of guns. State Representative Mike Pitts is credited with the idea and says it is not so much a stimulus as a political statement. Tax on handguns, rifles, and shotguns can exceed 9% in the state but buyers will still pay tax on ammunition and accessories. Some stores are expecting such big turnout that they are providing free barbeque to those waiting on line.

A misunderstood email caused quite a stir in Canada recently. At a dinner honoring the Canadian military, 1,700 guests heard that Lady Thatcher had passed away. Saddened by the news and wanting to prepare the appropriate statements, Dimitri Soudas, aide to the Canadian Prime Minister, placed calls to Buckingham Palace to gather appropriate details. British representatives were surprised by the calls and assured Soudas that Margaret Thatcher, the 84-year-old former British Prime Minister, was very much alive. The Canadian Transport Minister had named his 16-year-old cat Thatcher in honor of Mrs. Thatcher, and it was the feline that had recently passed.

Artist Shepard Fairey gained notoriety for creating the now-famous Barack Obama “HOPE” poster. Now he is in the news for admitting that he lied about the origin of the inspiration for that image. At first he stated it was from the Associated Press photo of Obama next to George Clooney. That would have fallen under a law called fair use which would allow him to use the image without paying for it. Now he has confessed that he lied and used a solo shot of Obama – a truth that is likely to undermine his fair use claim. In addition he attempted to destroy evidence to enhance his legal argument and this has caused his legal team to withdraw from the case.

The Obama administration is fueling a feud against the Fox News Network. In an interview released with Time last Thursday, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn stated Fox is “opinion journalism masquerading as news.” On Sunday, October 11, Dunn appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources commenting that Fox is “widely viewed as a part of the Republican Party . . .” and when Obama appears on Fox, it is not a news appearance, but rather an opportunity to debate opponents.
