Look It Up in the Dicktionary

January 27, 2010

California’s Menifee Union School District made headlines this week when administrators pulled a book from their shelves that was deemed “age inappropriate.”  The offending book, Merriam –Webster’s Dictionary.  One parent complained to administrators after a curious child looked up the meaning of “oral sex.”  School officials are forming a committee to determine the final verdict—and in the meantime, kids must turn elsewhere for the childhood right-of-passage to look up “dirty words” in the dictionary.

Dictionaries don’t belong where there’s learning
Inappropriate words are too concerning
Parents took a stand
Now Webster is banned
In the future, will these books be burning?
