J-No

November 10, 2009

This past week, Jennifer Lopez filed a $10,000,000 lawsuit against her first husband, Ojani Noa.  The suit accuses Noa and Ed Meyer of violating a settlement agreement with the production of their film, “How I Married Jennifer Lopez:  The JLo and Ojani Noa Story.”  This film would be comprised of home videos and footage of their honeymoon.  Lopez alleges her lawyer received an email stating some footage contained Lopez in a “revealing lack of clothing, and in sexual situations . . . “  Lopez and Noa were married in 1997 and divorced less than a year later.  click here for limerick

Band Hero Becoming a Tragic Kingdom for Activision

November 9, 2009

Released on November 3, 2009, Band Hero, is Activision’s family-friendly version of its popular Guitar Hero series.  This video game features pop hits from a variety of bands and solo artists (click here for a listing).  An added feature of this game includes digital versions, or avatars, of the participating recording artists.  However, the day after the game’s release, No Doubt, filed a lawsuit over a player’s ability to use the band’s avatars for any song, not just the three songs performed by the band.  No Doubt, exploded with their second album, Tragic Kingdom, that featured the singles “Just a Girl,” “Spiderwebs,” “Don’t Speak,” “Excuse Me Mr.,” and “Happy Now?”  They state they didn’t agree to the shifting avatars and commented it represents the band as “a virtual karaoke circus act.” click here for limerick

Up In Smoke

November 8, 2009

In 1996 voters in the state of California approved a ballot measure legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes.  Since that time, medical marijuana dispensaries have sprouted up all over the state with an abundance of them in Los Angeles County.  In fact, dispensaries in Los Angeles now outnumber Starbucks stores!  Because the dispensaries contribute much needed tax dollars in a bad economy, many cities are eager to implement more.  However, since this flies in the face of Federal regulations, legal issues continue to cloud this topic and threaten to dampen this revenue stream.  click here for limerick

Dueling Microphones

November 7, 2009

The 2010 broadcast of the Oscars will be a historic event.  On March 7 when the Oscars are aired, there will be two hosts – this has not happened since 1929.  Actors Steve Martin (who has had the honor twice before) and Alec Baldwin are teaming up to put a fresh face on things.  It should prove quite interesting with Steve’s love of banjo play and Alec’s penchant for off-color comments.  However, hosting live events is nothing new for either of them as they have been fiercely competing for the title of “Most Frequent Saturday Night Live Host”.  Martin is currently up by one having hosted a record-setting 15 times. click here for limerick

She’ll Have Her Day in McCourt

November 6, 2009

Last month Frank and Jamie McCourt announced their separation, ending a 30-year marriage.  The couple purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004 with Frank listed as owner and Chairman with Major League Baseball.  Jamie was appointed Chief Executive Officer.  Approximately one week after the separation announcement, Jamie McCourt was fired from her position under allegations she was recruiting investors to buy out her husband and gain control of the team as well as having an affair with a subordinate.  Jamie filed suit seeking reinstatement of her position, and on November 5th a Supreme Court Commissioner ruled against her claim.  Jamie states she is entitled to half of the Dodgers under the State of California’s guidelines to divide community property 50-50 in divorce cases.  However, several years ago she signed a legal document dividing the family assets that lists “all assets of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team” as belonging solely to Frank.  Jamie claims she was unaware of the clause and seeks its nullification—all this will be decided at a later date. click here for limerick

If You Can’t Be an Athlete…Be An Athletic Supporter

November 5, 2009

Stephen Colbert, television host and political satirist, has been working really hard to make a name for himself.   In October of 2007, he (unsuccessfully) tried to become a presidential candidate.  Earlier this year he called upon his fans, known as the Colbert Nation, to write him in as the name for the newest wing on the International Space Station.  They came through for him and he was the leading vote getter.  Ultimately NASA did not name it after him but did name a treadmill in his honor.  In his latest bid for immortality, he has stepped in to be the primary sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Speedskating team in the 2010 Winter Games. click here for limerick

Buffett Is All-In

November 4, 2009

Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, announced the acquisition of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp, the nation’s second largest railroad.  Currently Berkshire Hathaway owns 22% of the company and will buy the rest for approximately $34 billion.  Railroads are a quality investment as it will continue to be an attractive transportation option with the rising costs of diesel.  In his statement, Buffett is quoted, “Most important of all, however, [this acquisition is] an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States. I love these bets.”  click here for limerick

Cereal Killer-Part 2

November 3, 2009

New boxes of Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies, boast that eating that sugary cereal will boost your child’s immunity.   Playing on parents fears of swine flu and other communicable diseases has not gone over well so far.  Recently the city of San Francisco sent a letter to the FDA asking that the claim be proven.  Kellogg’s states that by increasing the amount of vitamins A, C, & E from 10% of daily value to 25%; they have boosted immunity.  Experts from Yale and NYU have both disputed these claims.  It was less than 6 months ago that Kellogg’s was forced to remove unsubstantiated claims from their Mini-Wheats advertisements. click here for limerick

Brettedict Arnold

November 2, 2009

Week 8 of the NFL season saw Brett Favre return to Green Bay but as an opposing player.  After 16 years as the celebrated quarterback for the Packers, he retired in 2007.  At the on-set of this season, he came out of retirement (for the second time) and took up residence at rival Minnesota.  He was greeted “home” with comparisons to Judas and Fredo from The Godfather movie.  However, at the end of the game he was victorious and became the first player in NFL history to defeat all 32 teams in the league. click here for limerick

Promises, Promises

November 1, 2009

It has been approximately one year since Barack Obama was elected President of The United States.  The USA Today newspaper found this to be an appropriate time to evaluate his campaign promises against his successes.  The paper took the time to take each category and break it into 3 sections: his promise, his quote, and the current status.  To read this fascinating article, click here. click here for limerick
