Aaaannd They’re Off!
November 27, 2009
In the United States, the day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday”. It is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season. It achieved its name because for many retailers it marks the time of the year that they go from a loss (in the red) to a profit (in the black). To maximize the day, stores open extraordinarily early and a rare few remain open for 24 hours. The earliest shoppers get the best deals on desirable items that are in strict limited quantity (called doorbusters). Unfortunately, some people take that term very literally and press up against the doors in an effort to be the first in. This “mob mentality” has caused some tragic accidents in recent years. In 2008, an employee at a Long Island, NY Wal-Mart was trampled to death when the crowd took the doors off their hinges and rushed inside. click here for limerick
