Who Are You?

November 30, 2009

On Thanksgiving (Thursday 11/26) the NFL announced that the Super Bowl halftime performance would feature the classic rock band, The Who.  The Who is a British band that was formed in 1964 and recorded enduring songs like My Generation, Who Are You, and Tommy.  The latter was the first to be recognized as a rock opera and subsequently became a movie in 1975 and a Broadway play in 1993.  Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend are the only surviving members of the quartet.  The Who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. click here for limerick

From The White House to the Big House

November 29, 2009

On November 24, 2009 President Barack Obama hosted his first state dinner honoring the prime minister of India and found two uninvited guests at the party.  Michaele and Tareq Salahi of Virginia somehow managed to get through Secret Service checkpoints and allowed to enter the event despite not being on the guest list.  The story is still evolving and latest reports are that they met Obama in the receiving line.  If they lied to gain entry they can be prosecuted and may face jail time.  Michaele is a former cheerleader for the Washington Redskins football team and is currently in the running to star in a reality show called, “The Real Housewives of Washington D.C”.  She allegedly informed the production company that they were invited to the party and were filmed in their home as they prepared. click here for limerick

Have A Blast This Holiday

November 28, 2009

The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday when retailers make big sales and turn big profits.  However, in South Carolina they are dubbing it, “Second Amendment Weekend” and (for two days) waive the tax on the sale of guns.  State Representative Mike Pitts is credited with the idea and says it is not so much a stimulus as a political statement.  Tax on handguns, rifles, and shotguns can exceed 9% in the state but buyers will still pay tax on ammunition and accessories.  Some stores are expecting such big turnout that they are providing free barbeque to those waiting on line. click here for limerick

Aaaannd They’re Off!

November 27, 2009

In the United States, the day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday”.  It is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season.  It achieved its name because for many retailers it marks the time of the year that they go from a loss (in the red) to a profit (in the black).  To maximize the day, stores open extraordinarily early and a rare few remain open for 24 hours.  The earliest shoppers get the best deals on desirable items that are in strict limited quantity (called doorbusters).  Unfortunately, some people take that term very literally and press up against the doors in an effort to be the first in.  This “mob mentality” has caused some tragic accidents in recent years.  In 2008, an employee at a Long Island, NY Wal-Mart was trampled to death when the crowd took the doors off their hinges and rushed inside. click here for limerick

Gobble Gobble!

November 26, 2009

Suspected bank robber John Ford of Cleveland, Ohio gave new meaning to the term “eating his words” when he was arrested recently.   When police caught him he was driving a car matching witnesses descriptions, he had a sack of money with exploded die on it, and a white piece of paper in his pocket.  It is assumed that the paper was the note he used demanding the money.  However we may never know because while he was handcuffed and placed on the hood of the police car the police searched him and emptied his pockets. When they put the paper down, the dashboard camera saw him (but the police did not) use his mouth to pick it up and gobble down the evidence! click here for limerick

Is Adam GLAAD for the Publicity?

November 25, 2009

The 2009 American Music Awards (AMA) aired on Sunday, November 22 to honor some of music’s greats.  As is the tradition, awards were interspersed with performances by popular acts.  In his first AMA appearance, Adam Lambert, sparked immediate controversy with a performance containing simulated male-on-male sex and a long kiss with a bandmate.  Lambert, the most recent runner-up on the TV show American Idol and first openly gay contestant, was scheduled to perform on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, November 25th.  However, the appearance was canceled because executives were concerned about “airing a similar concert so early in the morning.”  The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), has released a statement about this.  click here for limerick

Up, Up and Away

November 24, 2009

A proposal in Burton, Ohio certainly did not go as planned. James Ng took his girlfriend, Sonya Bostic, on hot air balloon ride over some stunning fall foliage.  He hid the ring in his camera bag but at 500 feet, and over a thick patch of woods, he dropped the bag.  He could do nothing as he watched the bag hit a tree, burst open, and the contents disperse.  By his reaction alone, Sonya knew what was just lost and he opted to propose without the ring.  (She said yes.)  When back on the ground, James made maps, charted possible paths the balloon took, and spent 7 days and countless hours walking through the woods.  When he finally found the bag it had but one item left in it. .  .the ring. click here for limerick

Microsoft is Touchy About Windows 7

November 23, 2009

On October 22, 2009, Microsoft released its newest version of Windows, called Windows 7 featuring touch screen technology.  This is the latest in a long list of upgraded operating systems that is full of promises.  While initial reviews are good, only time will tell if can live up to the hype.  The previous Windows version, Vista, was touted as being ultra secure, but many users grew frustrated with it as it required multiple authorizations for approved functions.  It was also a “heavy” software that requires significant hard drive space and memory.  Many users were sorry to have transferred to Vista and some downgraded to its predecessor, Windows XP.  In fact, Vista was so reviled that it took only eight hours of pre-sale for 7 at amazon.co.uk to surpass Vista’s sales for its first 17 weeks!  All of this has given Microsoft’s competitor, Apple Computer, much fodder to mock the software giant and steal some of its customer base.  click here for limerick

“Field” Sobriety Test

November 22, 2009

In the city of Export, Pennsylvania, police arrested a DUI suspect.  It might have been just another unremarkable night for the State Trooper credited with the arrest – except – the criminal was on a tractor.  Ford Earl Broome, 63, admitted to the officer that he “drank a little” before getting on his tractor and making a beer run.  His blood alcohol limit was approximately double the legal limit!  click here for limerick

AT&T the Red Faced Phone Company

November 21, 2009

The holiday season is a popular time for wireless phone companies to make sales.  This year Verizon is facing AT&T head-on.  The battle is over network coverage where 3G (the fastest service) is available.  Verizon has various ads showing that their 3G coverage is five times greater.  AT&T does not dispute the accuracy of the maps but states that they could lead consumers to believe that non 3G areas receive no AT&T coverage at all.  AT&T has filed a lawsuit to have the ads removed.  The latest version of the ads depicts the iPhone on the “Island of Misfit Toys” which was featured in the popular Rankin-Bass Christmas cartoon Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  Prior to this, Verizon featured the long-running “Can you hear me now?” campaign. click here for limerick
