Patrick Kane of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks has been accused of beating a Buffalo, NY cab driver because the driver lacked twenty cents in change. Cabbie, Jan Radecki, claims to have been grabbed by the throat, punched, and his glasses broken. Kane and his cousin, 21 year-old, James Kane, hailed the cab around 4 a.m. in the downtown nightclub district and both were charged. Andrew LoTempio, attorney for the driver does not believe this will be a felony and believes that both sides can come to an agreement. Kane, 20, is a key piece of the Blackhawks offense. He was the number one overall pick in the 2007 draft and rookie of the year in 2008.

Does it feel to you like President Obama is always on television? That is certainly how Deloris Nissen of Carroll, Iowa feels. She recently placed a classified ad stating that she is selling 2 television sets because Obama is on every channel and station. As she put it, “I just got tired of watching him on every channel. I thought, my gosh, does he ever stay at the White House?” She does appear to be in the minority in her area because Obama did win her county and state in the 2008 election.

Over the past several days Democratic legislators have hosted town hall meetings to discuss President Obama’s health care proposal. Several of these meetings have been interrupted by angry protestors that have shouted over the speaker. In response, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) created a video alleging Republicans organized the angry mobs. At the video’s conclusion, the DNC encourages viewers to call the Republican National Committee (RNC) to voice their displeasure. However, when people called the primary number, they were greeted by a recording asking them to press 1 if the call is regarding the town hall meetings . . . and then the call was promptly transferred to the Democrat National Committee’s main number.

On Thursday, August 6, 2009, Judge Sonia Sotomayor made history as the first Hispanic person to be appointed to the Supreme Court. She was confirmed 68 – 31 with nine Republicans joining the unanimous Democratic vote. After her selection by President Obama in late May, Sotomayor’s earlier statement of being a “wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences” caused critics to portray her as an activist judge. In contrast, through the confirmation process Sotomayor provided “purposely bland testimony, her determination to . . . say practically nothing” and when presented with hot topic issues, consistently stated she could not voice her opinion without the facts of the case. The 55-year-old Bronx-born Sotomayor will be sworn in as the eleventh Justice by Chief Justice John Roberts on Saturday.

Chicago’s Field Museum is experiencing an increase in visitors who are flocking there to see Michael Jackson – at least that is what it looks like. Since 1988, the museum has been displaying a 3,000 year old Egyptian bust that bears a striking resemblance to Michael Jackson. Now since Jackson’s death, the bust is getting renewed recognition. Some people are even commenting on the bust’s lack of a nose which mirrors reports that Jackson had a prosthetic nose which went missing at the morgue. In an additional coincidence, Jackson’s video for the song Remember The Time featured him in an Egyptian setting.

If you have flown on a commercial airliner in your life, chances are you are familiar with the safety instructions that precede the flight. If you are a frequent flier, chances are you ignore this video because you have seen it so many times before. At least that is the findings of a 2001 National Transportation Safety Board study. This has caused airlines to try to find new and creative ways to get you to pay attention to this vital information. For example, Southwest Airlines has become very popular for their rapping flight attendant. However, in a very bold move, Air New Zealand has their personnel perform in the nude! But before you get all hot and bothered, they are fully covered up with body paint that nearly perfectly mimics the uniforms they wear in their position. If you are not planning a trip to Kiwi country, click here to see the safety video.

From the time that Barack Obama came to prominence as presidential candidate, rumors have implied that he is not an American citizen, a requirement to become President of the United States. Obama’s people quickly posted a copy of a certified birth certificate showing he was born on August 4, 1961 in Hawaii. Skeptics, now known as “birthers” believe the birth certificate is fake and that Obama was born in Kenya. The birth certificate has been authenticated by experts and a birth announcement appeared in two separate Hawaiian newspapers in 1961. What is interesting is that the “birthing” platform has reached high-level Republicans in Congress who continue to add fuel to the debate. Here is a link to a recent response from Press Secretary Robert Gibbs about the matter.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the U.S. Federal Government would attempt to stimulate automobile sales by offering cash back for trading in qualified vehicles. One billion dollars was set aside for the rebates which ranged from $3,500 to $4,500. The program was slated to begin on July 1, 2009 and run through November. Various factors caused it to be delayed to late July and it was an immediate success. So much so, that after only one week there was no money left to reimburse participating dealerships. The program was suspended and at the time of this writing, Congress is debating adding an additional two billion dollars to extend the offer. The “Cash for Clunkers” program is the second popular rebate program in 2009. In February, Congress delayed the switch to digital television by three months after the National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced it ran out of funds for the converter box rebate program.
