Cheating Husband

August 31, 2009

A man near Tysons  Corner, VA has been standing on the side of the road wearing a sign that reads “I cheated.  This is my punishment”.   He has not revealed his true name, his wife’s name, or where he lives throughout the many interviews he has given the media.  The story he tells is that his wife found on his cell phone pictures of his male privates that he sent to a woman with whom he was having an affair.  Because details cannot be verified, many are beginning to believe this may be a ploy to garner some national exposure (no pun intended) but even that purpose is not clear.  click here for limerick

Room with a View

August 30, 2009

In June 2009, New York City opened the High Line Park, at the location of a former elevated freight railroad at the lower west side of Manhattan.  Straddling this elevated park is the Standard Hotel that was named “best new building” by the Municipal Art Society of New York last year.  Since the park’s opening, there have been a number of complaints about the hotel’s guests.  The Standard’s room feature floor-to-ceiling windows and several guests walk around naked in their rooms—in total view of the park patrons.  Last week, the Standard Hotel issued a statement they will “remind guests of the transparency” of the windows.  click here for limerick

A Sweet Day for Kids

August 29, 2009

Earlier this month, the classic children’s game, Candy Land, celebrated its 60th anniversary.  To mark this special occasion, Lombard Street in San Francisco, known as the crookedest street in the world, was converted into a giant Candy Land board (check out these photos).  Kids from nearby UCSF Children’s Hospital and other organizations participated in the game, moving between the large, colored squares and through the Chocolate Swamp and Peppermint Forest.  Characters from the game including Princess Lolly and King Kandy were on hand for the event.   click here for limerick

Swiss Chocolate Isn’t The Only Thing That Melts Away

August 28, 2009

In a very rare event, the country of Switzerland has grown larger.  In 1942 Switzerland and Italy used the watershed in the high alps to determine borders.  However, in this climate of global warming, the glaciers melted, causing the watershed to move, and revealing additional land belonging to the Swiss.  The discovery was made by the Swiss Federal Office of Topography and the decision to adjust the boarder was approved by Italian officials.  The total amount of land gain was 164 yards so there is no plan to change the atlas! click here for limerick

They Put the Brakes on Her Dinner

August 27, 2009

Environmentalist Sarah Gilbert of Portland, Oregon rides around her bike-friendly town on a custom built bike that holds her and her three sons.  She even sports a bumper sticker touting “one less minivan”.  But her joyride stopped short when Burgerville would not allow her to use their drive-through.  She found this surprising because the restaurant is known to be eco-friendly and Portland sports nearly 10 times more bike commuters than the national average.  She immediately went home and sent a tweet to her 3,000 followers and posted to her blog.  Jeff Harvey, CEO of the burger chain, would like Sarah’s input on a bike-friendly alternative.  click here for limerick

Want Some “Bread” for That Cheese?

August 26, 2009

Finding gold in a bank vault probably would not surprise you very much. But what if that gold was 85-pound round wheels of cheese instead of metal bars?  That would be the case if you were in the Credito Emiliano’s bank in Milan, Italy.  Since just after World War II, the Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese Consortium, has been banking their cheese during the aging process as collateral for loans.  While this has been a key factor through the decades, it becomes even more vital in down economies because it ensures that credit is available.  The vault holds up to 400,000 wheels and when full is valued around $186 million.  click here for limerick

A Space Oddity

August 25, 2009

The International Space Station has added a new wing and NASA created a contest to give it a name.  Comedian, Stephen Colbert and his loyal fans wrote-in nominations of his name (Colbert) and that entry received more votes than any other.  Unfortunately for him, NASA exercised the contest’s fine print stating that it would choose the name that is ultimately in the best interest of the agency.  Therefore, they chose the name Tranquility in honor of The Sea of Tranquility where Apollo 11 landed on the moon 40 years ago.  But in recognition of Colbert and all the attention he brought to the project, they have named the space station’s new treadmill after him.  It is COLBERT: Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill.  At 1:36am today, the space shuttle is scheduled to launch and transport 15,200 lbs of scientific equipment and COLBERT to its new home on the international space station.  click here for limerick

“Clunker” of a Phone Number

August 24, 2009

The government program dubbed “Cash For Clunkers” will end today at 8pm ET – and not a minute too soon if you ask one florist in central Illinois.  The Flower Corner in Clinton, IL, has been receiving up to 150 calls a day from people who are inquiring about trading in their cars.  Are you confused?  So was the flower shop.  It turns out that GM was publicizing a toll-free phone number for the trade-in program that was nearly identical to that of the flower shop.  GM’s number was an 877 toll free number and although that prefix has been around for quite a while, in many people’s minds, toll free still means 800.  And you guessed it, the flower shop’s number was 800 and then identical to the number GM publicized.  This has been more than just a minor inconvenience.  Customers could not get through to place orders and employees are so busy answering the phone that productivity has dropped.  Perhaps worst of all is that the flower shop must pay for every call that comes in on their toll free number!  click here for limerick

No Political Missteps Here

August 23, 2009

Since its inception, Dancing with the Stars has featured the gamut of celebrities from Olympic and pro athletes, to actors and actresses, personalities and entertainers and even a few known from the political realm.  When the ninth season cast was announced on August 17, 2009, the list included former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.  First elected in 1984, DeLay rose to prominence as the House Majority Whip in 1995 and was elected House Majority Leader in 2002.  A few years later DeLay was indicted on violations to campaign finance laws.  Although he pled not guilty and charges were never brought against him, DeLay was forced to resign as House Majority Leader.  Around that time two of DeLay’s former aides were convicted in a separate scandal.  DeLay will be partnered with two-time Dancing with the Stars champion Cheryl Burke.   click here for limerick

She Likes Short Shorts

August 22, 2009

The first lady of the United States is often looked at for her fashion sense and Michelle Obama is no different.  Since her husband took office in January, Michelle has shown a very different style than those who came before her.  There are many that admire her for her casual and accessible style with clothing from stores like J. Crew.  However, there seems to be an equal number of detractors.  On Februrary 24, 2009 her arms caused a stir with a sleeveless dress, and now her legs are in the spotlight.  The Obamas were visiting the Grand Canyon (currently one of the hottest parts of the country) when she exited Air Force One wearing shorts that many say were unflattering.  Anya Strzemien, style editor at The Huffington Post, states that this is the first time a first lady has worn shorts on Air Force One.  click here for limerick
