Since 1936, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile has been zipping around our country visiting schools, orphanages, children’s hospitals, and various parades. 1969 marked the first time the Wienermobile made a foray overseas. Its horn plays the famous jingle in 21 different ways including Cajun and Rap. Recently, in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, the driver of the vehicle (known as a “hotdogger”) was trying to turn the big dog around. She thought she was in reverse, but she was in drive and when she hit the gas, she ran into a house and cracked its foundation. No one was home and no one was hurt and Oscar Meyer states that damage would be covered by insurance.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin helmed the Apollo 11 mission to the moon with Armstrong’s iconic comment, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The initial and subsequent moon landings have often been cited as the “greatest technological achievement in human history.” In preparation for the moon landing’s 40th anniversary, NASA officials looked for the tapes of the historic moment and discovered they were missing. Richard Nafzger investigated and learned the original tapes were erased and taped over in a money-saving effort several years before. Fortunately, quality copies were discovered at CBS News and Johnson Space Center and underwent digital restoration by Lowry Digital. The full set of recordings will be released in September.

On Wednesday, July 15, 2009, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince premiered and brought in a staggering $104 million on its opening day. The sixth installment has been well-received by fans and critics alike. Both the movies and the books by J.K. Rowling follow the journey of Harry Potter as he is educated about the world of wizardry including the Evanesco, or vanishing spell, as well as battling the evil Lord Voldemort. Unfortunately for Potter fans in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, more than $5,000 worth of electronic items were taken from their cars parked at the Cape Cod Mall as they watched the latest release. The alleged thieves were captured on the spot and several Potter fans reclaimed their stolen items that evening.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the number of bears in the state has increased sixfold over the last 20 years. A few decades back, the bear population was measured at 5,000. Today there are approximately 30,000 bears in the state, with most in northern Wisconsin and a few migrating to the central forest area and western regions. Bear breeding season is in June and July, the best time of year to catch a glimpse of these animals-hopefully at a distance!

Talk-show host and cooking icon Rachael Ray had successful throat surgery earlier this week to remove a benign cyst from her vocal cords. It has been reported that Ray pursued non-surgical options before following the advice from her doctors and scheduled the surgery. Ray came to prominence with her 30 Minute Meals show on Food Network and brought several catch-phrases to the cooking lexicon. Examples include Yum-o; e.v.o.o. (extra virgin olive oil); stoup (a cross between a soup and a stew) and delish (for delicious). The always chatty Ray is under strict orders to rest her vocal cords and her media rep told People Magazine, “The hardest part for Rachael is going to be giving her voice a rest for the next week or so.”

Prior to Tuesday evening’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, President Obama is scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch. This is a notable occasion as the last sitting president to throw out the first pitch was Gerald Ford in 1976. The pre-game ceremony also pays tribute to “All-Stars Among Us,” 30 people being honored for their public service. Tim Brosnan, MLB Executive Vice President for Business, commented these vignettes were inspired by Obama’s calls to action. There could also be the opportunity for Obama to visit Joe Buck and Tim McCarver in the broadcast booth during the game.

Cultural icons can mean different things to different generations – just ask Hal Lansky of Memphis, TN. In his back yard, he had the iconic statue that for over 70 years stood as the unmistakable symbol of Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant. Recently the statue was stolen and later found by two college students. However, their recognition of it extended less than 15 years because they knew it as the spaceship Dr. Evil uses for his getaway in one of the Austin Powers movies.

An upstate New York gas station was robbed by two armed men last week. The two crooks, Lonnie Meckwood and Phillip Weeks, might have gotten away with it . . . if they hadn’t run out of gas approximately one mile away from the service station. Meckwood and Weeks knocked on doors in the neighborhood asking for spare gas. One person offered to drive the duo to the Quickway Convenience Store-the one that they had just robbed. The duo convinced the good Samaritan to take them to a gas station in a neighboring town. Police caught up to and arrested Meckwood and Weeks as they were filling their 1995 Saturn getaway car with gas.
