In these difficult economic times, state lawmakers are looking for creative ways to make up for the dramatic budgetary shortcomings. As bad as 2009 has been, it is projected that 2010 will be even worse. Since we are evolving into a service-based economy, that is the area where legislatures foresee revenue coming from. For example: Kentucky has taxed ring tones for your cell phone, Virginia requested to increase inmates daily rent by 500% (from $1 to $5), Governor David Patterson of New York proposed an 18% tax on sugary beverages – this was referred to as the “fat tax“, and Georgia proposed a “pole tax” targeting strip club patrons. But perhaps the most outlandish idea has been to legalize marijuana and tax it. Recently, Oakland, CA became the first city to tax medical marijuana and other cities are thinking about following their lead. click here for limerick
