O-moo-ga 3 Fatty Acids

June 24, 2009

In Vermont, dairy farmers are working together to reduce the amount of cows’ intestinal methane as it is the leading cause of agricultural greenhouse gases.   Studies have also shown that burps have greater emissions than gas escaping from the other end of the cow.  They’ve switched from a corn or soy diet to one of alfalfa, flaxseed and grasses high in Omega 3 fatty acids, greatly reducing gas production in the cow’s intestine.  The farmers participating in the Greener Cow Project do not pay more for the customized feed and have noticed the cows are healthier on the new diet.     click here for limerick
