Caveat Blogtor (Let the Blogger Beware)

June 23, 2009

The internet has become an incredible source for information about anything.  Because of the informal and ever-evolving use of the internet, formal ethical guidelines have not been in place for bloggers and personal websites.  As a result, some blogs that review products receive compensation from the companies that manufacture or distribute the items.  This is a permitted practice, as long as the website acknowledges receipt of freebies or compensation.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) believes that a large number of bloggers are not disclosing their relationships with the companies.  The agency is taking steps to publish guidelines later this summer and will begin monitoring websites for infractions.

We scour the internet to learn what people think
And read product reviews from this virtual ink
But the buyer must beware
A few websites don’t declare
The company and the site have a common link
