Passport Please

June 1, 2009

As of June 1, 2009, the final stage of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative takes effect for travelers crossing the northern and southern borders of the United States.  Sweeping changes occurred in 2008 when the person needed to show proof of citizenship in the form of a passport, birth certificate or voter registration card.  The new regulations permit only the acceptance of a passport, passport card, or other travel documents in the “Trusted Traveler” program that are approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  A government official has confirmed that thus far there has not been an increase in requests for passports, likely due to the rush created with the 2007/2008 travel document changes.

You have fewer documents from which to choose
After returning from that Mexican cruise
There are new rules of order
When you’re crossing the border
And you still complete forms designed to confuse
