The $impson$

May 21, 2009

It was 1989 when a dysfunctional family of little yellow characters first entered out homes.  From the very beginning, The Simpsons was a hit and with its recent contract extension, it will become TV’s longest running prime-time series.  The Simpsons owner, 20th Century Fox is currently hard at work trying to ramp up the merchandising portion of the show.  Beyond the typical T-shirts and lunchboxes, they are branching off into U.S. Postal Stamps, theme park rides, guitars, and even museums.  It is believed that if they structure this properly, they can move more merchandise than Snoopy, Bugs Bunny, and even Mickey Mouse!  click here for limerick

Judicial Fight Lights Up

May 20, 2009

Officials in Englewood, Ohio are in a court battle to own the town’s streetlamps.  Currently the town leases the lamps from Miami Valley Lighting for about $220,000 per year.  If Englewood owned the streetlights, they estimate it would save taxpayers $100,000 per year.  Lower courts have ruled the town cannot own the streetlights because they are not considered a public utility.  City Manager Eric Smith has gone on record saying the rulings defy common sense.  Officials are now taking the case to the state Supreme Court. click here for limerick

Script Gets Canned

May 18, 2009

Stephanie Meyer is the author of the Twilight series whose book titles are: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.  The books follow Edward, a vampire, and Bella, the teenager he loves.  While Meyer is an incredibly popular author, critic reviews have not been kind.  In August 2008, a prequel to the series, called Midnight Sun, was leaked on the internet and generated comments from fans and critics alike about the poor writing.  In November of 2009 the second Twilight movie (New Moon) is slated to be released and to help ensure it has the same impact as the first, it has been shrouded in secrecy.  So it was quite a shock when a copy of the script was discovered in a St. Louis trash can by hair salon owner Casey Ray.  After realizing what she had, she returned the script to the production company, and was rewarded with the promise that the script would be returned to her and she could attend the movie’s premiere.  click here for limerick

A Sticking Point with Consumers

May 17, 2009

DuPont Co. dodged a bullet when a 22-case lawsuit representing 15 states against them was not granted class action status in an Iowa court.  It was alleged that a chemical used in the process of creating their non-stick Teflon coating could become a cancer-causing agent in humans when heated to normal cooking temperature.  It is estimated that if the lawsuit was successful, it would have cost DuPont $5 billion.  click here for limerick

Plumber’s Crack

May 16, 2009

Earlier this week a man was arraigned in a Queens courtroom for “interfering with a major sporting event”.  Craig Coakley jumped onto the baseball field during a recent Mets game, completely naked except for a stuffed monkey tied around his waist and “Let’s Go Mets” painted on his back.  After he was arrested, Coakley, a plumber, commented he did the stunt to win a bet from his employer.  If convicted Coakley could face up to one year in a jail and a fine as high as $5,000.  click here for limerick

New Business Model

May 15, 2009

Kenny Tessel, owner of KT’s Barbeque and Deli in Cincinnati, Ohio, was concerned about the future of his restaurant.  With sales down 40%, he decided it was time for a new marketing plan.  So, for $200 he bought a mannequin from a catalog, named her BarBe Q, dressed her in a bikini top and “short shorts”, and placed her in front of his restaurant.  Business immediately increased and so did scrutiny from the public and the city council.  The council told him he was told he could keep the mannequin if she was more modestly dressed.   At this time Tessel is considering an appeal. click here for limerick

Future Hall of Shamers

May 14, 2009

In recent years allegations of steroid use has loomed large over all professional sports teams including major league baseball.   At the end of 2007 the “Mitchell Report” was released detailing a 20-month long investigation into baseball’s use of steroids and human growth hormones.  This report also listed 89 former and current players who are alleged to have used steroids or drugs at least one time in their career.  In the past week Manny Ramirez, formerly of the Boston Red Sox and currently the star player of the Los Angeles Dodgers, tested positive for a banned substance.  While the substance found was not a steroid, it is widely used after a steroid cycle to return testosterone levels back to normal.  On NBCSports.com, contributor Mike Celizic, posed the question, are top sports agents such as Scott Boras and Michael Nicotera encouraging steroid use since it also pumps up their profits?  click here for limerick

Is Lt. Dan the GOP’s Man?

May 12, 2009

The Republican Party lost a lot of ground in the 2008 elections.  Not only was a Democratic president elected, but Democrats have the majority in both the House and the Senate.  Leaders are investigating options to strengthen the party’s presence and identify a strong competitor for the 2012 presidential election.  Thus far the short list contains the usual expected names, but no one was prepared for Nicolle Wallace, a top campaign advisor to George W. Bush and John McCain, to suggest actor Gary Sinise while writing a column entitled Waiting for Reagan on The Daily Beast.  While Sinise, known for his roles as Detective Mac Taylor on CSI: NY  and Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, is not viewed as a political personality, he has entertained U.S. troops, supports veteran’s causes and in 2008 was awarded the Presidential Citizen Medal for his humanitarian efforts in Iraq.  click here for limerick
