Judicial Fight Lights Up
May 20, 2009
Officials in Englewood, Ohio are in a court battle to own the town’s streetlamps. Currently the town leases the lamps from Miami Valley Lighting for about $220,000 per year. If Englewood owned the streetlights, they estimate it would save taxpayers $100,000 per year. Lower courts have ruled the town cannot own the streetlights because they are not considered a public utility. City Manager Eric Smith has gone on record saying the rulings defy common sense. Officials are now taking the case to the state Supreme Court.
The city of Englewood continues its fight
Owning the streetlights they say is their right
The savings are clear
One hundred grand a year
Sometimes our judges just can’t see the light
