Judicial Fight Lights Up

Officials in Englewood, Ohio are in a court battle to own the town’s streetlamps. Currently the town leases the lamps from Miami Valley Lighting for about $220,000 per year. If Englewood owned the streetlights, they estimate it would save taxpayers $100,000 per year. Lower courts have ruled the town cannot own the streetlights because they are not considered a public utility. City Manager Eric Smith has gone on record saying the rulings defy common sense.
