World Series Champs . . . Not In Their Lifetime!

April 30, 2009

Even though the Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series Title in 101 years, Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, IL unveiled its “Fans Forever” section.  A red brick wall, designed to look like the one at Wrigley Field, contains 288 “skyboxes” to hold the cremated remains of dearly departed Cubs fans.  Of course the ashes can be stored inside $800 Cubbie blue and white urns.  Included in the “Fans Forever” section are four seats from Wrigley and a small patch of lawn for a quiet game of catch. click here for limerick

Barack’s First 100 Days

April 29, 2009

Of all the events that transpired in President Barack Obama’s first 100 days, the most notable may be the popularity of the First Family.  As of April 24, 2009, USA Today reported that, “56% say he has done an excellent or good job” and “his excellent/good rating on national security is 53% and 48% on the economy.”  It should be noted that there are definite divisions among political parties.  9 of 10 Democrats rate him as excellent/good while only 1 in 4 Republicans say the same.  His and Michelle’s first visit to Europe had scores of people waiting to see him and one European commented “he’s bigger than Brad Pitt.”  But if Barack’s approval numbers are good, Michelle’s are even better, and her appeal crosses party lines – 79% of people approve of the job she is doing vs. 8% who do not.  The biggest buzz of the Obama family belongs to its newest member, Bo, the Portuguese Water Dog that joined the family earlier this month.  Bo has become so popular that he has his own Topps Trading Card in the Obama set and stars in his own action book titled, Bo, America’s Commander in Leash.  click here for limerick

A Stimulating 100 Days

April 28, 2009

We continue our series of limericks counting down to the 100th day of Obama’s presidency.  The passage of the economic stimulus plan was one of the first challenges and victories of the Obama administration.  President Obama then used the stimulus funds as a negotiating chip with the beleaguered automotive firms calling for the resignation of General Motors’ CEO Rick Wagoner before additional monies were invested in the company.  The Congressional Budget Office projects that Obama’s $3.55 trillion budget will increase the national deficit to almost $2 trillion and double the national debt over the next decade.  click here for limerick

Obama Shows Transparency . . . In His Motives

April 27, 2009

This week Daily Limerick will countdown to Barack Obama’s 100th day as President of the United States with a series of limericks about notable events that occurred since he has taken office.  Earlier this month Obama released top-secret memos detailing the CIA’s use of interrogation techniques on terrorist suspects.  With the memos becoming public, Obama stated he would not seek prosecution of the CIA officers and interrogators.  Later he rescinded this statement and remarked that any prosecution stemming from these memos would be decided by Attorney General Eric Holder.  It is unprecedented that a president would release his predecessor’s documents so quickly after taking office.  This move also coincides with recent foreign trips with veiled comments about “times where America has shown arrogance, even derisive” and the “new beginnings” of the Obama administration.  click here for limerick

Rotten Apple

April 26, 2009

The highly popular iPhone by Apple allows users to download over 25,000 applications (referred to as apps) to do everything from process credit cards to playing silly games.  However, Apple made a big mistake when they allowed an app called “baby shaker” to go on sale in their App Store.  For 99 cents, users could get a drawing of a baby that whines and cries.  Quieting the baby required shaking the phone violently until a large red X appeared over each eye.  Outrage was immediate from the general public and from the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.  Apple quickly pulled the app, but video of how to “play” can be found on the Internet.  click here for limerick

Gearing up for Laundry

April 25, 2009

For the 600 kids at La Sagrada Familia Orphanage in Peru, laundry day was hours of hard work washing the more than 2 tons of dirty clothes each week.  Much of that has changed with the introduction of the bici-lavadora, a $125 washing machine that is gaining more and more use in third-world countries.  As Daniel Sieberg of CBS News reports, the bici-lavadora was created in MIT’s experimental D-Lab where students look for simple solutions to third-world problems.  The bici-lavadora is a steel drum filled with clothes, water, and soap and then powered by a person riding an attached bicycle.  (Bici is from bicicleta, Spanish for bike, and lavadora, Spanish for washing machine.) click here for limerick

Blago’s Harsh Reality

April 24, 2009

Impeached former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is interested in re-inventing himself as a reality television star.  He asked a federal judge for permission to travel to Costa Rica to film an NBC  show called, “I’m a Celebrity . . . Get me Out of Here“  The judge denied the request on the grounds that Blago is a flight risk.  NBC offered to pay for two security guards to watch him day and night but since they would lack jurisdiction to arrest him, the judge denied that too.  Blagojevich claims that he needs this to support his children.  Casting for the show will be announced today.  If convicted on political corruption charges, he faces 25 to 30 years in prison. click here for limerick

Caddywhack

April 23, 2009

While participating in a pro-am golf tournament in Florida, actor Bill Murray’s tee shot hit a spectator.  The shot was so far off that it flew across a street and hit Gail DiMaggio standing in her front yard, knocking her down.  At first Murray did not know he had hit, let alone injured, a person.  Paramedics attended to Ms. DiMaggio and she was taken to a hospital.  Murray is an avid golfer and starred in the classic golf comedy film Caddyshack.  click here for limerick

Cereal Killer

April 22, 2009

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has forced Kellogg Co. to change its advertising message on Frosted Mini-Wheats.  Kellogg advertised that clinical studies proved that children who ate mini-wheats in the morning were nearly 20% more attentive.  The FTC called those health claims “unsubstantiated” and only half the children in the clinical study showed an improvement in attentiveness after eating the cereal.  click here for limerick

Horseplay in the Hamptons

April 21, 2009

Madonna is blaming paparazzi for her latest horseback riding accident.  On Saturday, April 18, while riding at a friends’ home in the Hamptons, she fell from the horse and got a few bumps and bruises.  Her people claim that a photographer jumped out of the bushes and scared the horse, causing the incident.  Thomas Hinton, the photographer in question denies the allegations.  click here for limerick
