In Thornton, Colorado, Larry and Andrea Tabler, celebrated the grand opening of their Highline Circle of Life Center on Sunday, March 29, 2009. Larry has been in the funeral-home business for 42 years and has seen a declining number of traditional burials for an increase in less expensive cremations. This prompted him to try something new – holding wedding ceremonies in the same venue as the funerals. Steffani Blackstock, Executive Director of the Colorado Funeral Directors Association, put it this way , “You use flowers for both; you use ministers for both; and it’s the one time everyone comes together.”

Headlines were made when Ponzi-scheme-financier Bernard Madoff’s bail was revoked and he was sent to jail. The following day, Madoff’s mug shot appeared in the newspaper that accompanied his prison number: 61727-054. On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, President Obama held a primetime news conference with the primary topic the economy and his administration’s recovery plans. Obama defended the current strategies stating “We’ll recover from this recession, but it will take time, it will take patience . . .” and that everyone “will attack this crisis from all fronts.” It is at times like this that our country’s leader and his top aides need to analyze this situation at hand and make the tough choices leading to a final, successful strategy. Case in point, earlier in the month President Obama completed a bracket for his NCAA basketball predictions. At first he looked off his game after several of his teams were eliminated. His picks rebounded over the weekend and fourteen of the “Sweet Sixteen” teams are his selections. Let’s hope this ability carries over to the economic sphere!

Twitter, a social networking site, continues to grow at a rapid rate. Part blog, part instant message, Twitter users answer the question “What are you doing?” in 140 characters or less. As with any public communications device, users must be wary of what is posted. Recently, a Twitter user, theconnor, posted (also known as a “Tweet”) a comment on a recent job offer from Cisco. In it he wrote, “Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.” A Cisco employee then responded questioning the connor’s suitability at the company. Theconnor attempted to remove his comment and prevent revealing his identity, but was unsuccessful. Speculation is Cisco rescinded its offer to theconnor.
