Yesterday, January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of The United States of America. During the inauguration, Chief Justice John Roberts stumbeld slightly on the words of the oath which Obama repeated. Later, during his 20-minute address to the nation, he covered many topics from economics to war.

Today, history will be made when the 44th President of the United States is inaugurated. Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) defeated Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) in the November election and will become the first U.S. African-American President. His election marks a drastic change from the previous administration. In fact, “Change” was a vial part of his campaign slogan.

For months broadcasters have promoted a nation-wide television signal switch from analog to digital. The approximately 70 million people who do not own digital-ready televisions must acquire a converter box prior to the February 17, 2009 switch. The government set aside $1.34 billion to offer $40 vouchers to offset the purchase of the device–ranging in price from $40 to $70. Earlier this month the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced it ran out of money and is placing people on a voucher waiting list. Lawmakers are talking about delaying the signal change until June 2009.

This week The Coca-Cola Company and United Resource Recovery Corporation opened a new $60 million bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new plant, the largest in the world, will produce 100 million pounds of recycled plastic for reuse, the equivalent of producing nearly two billion 20-ounce Coca-Cola bottles. The plant is also expected to eliminate the production of one-million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions – the equivalent of removing 215,000 cars from the road.

Toyota Motor Corp initiated a series of upgrades to its popular Prius to encourage greater sales in the overseas market. The company aims to sell 180,000 units domestically and 400,000 vehicles world-wide. This third-generation Prius features a more aerodynamic exterior and a solor roof to power the ventilation system.

Topps trading cards announced it will create a 90-card series of President-elect Barack Obama. Highlights include Obama in his high school basketball uniform and a card that will be redeemed for a photo of the to-be-selected presidential puppy. Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl holds the distinction of being the youngest mayor of an major U.S. city. With this weekend’s NFL playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens, callers to a local sports-talk show suggested the mayor change his name, lest he be mistaken as a Ravens fan. Ravenstahl took their advice and submitted the official paperwork to change his name to Luke Steelerstahl. The paperwork received a docket number, but will not be processed further until the $106 fee for a name change is received. Incidentally, “stahl” is German for “steel.”

As American Idol prepares for its eighth season, producers announced the addition of a fourth judge. Grammy-Nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi will take a seat at the judges table alongside Paula, Randy, and Simon. DioGuardi is a sought-after songwriter and producer whose creations have appeared on more than 100 million records.

The Green Inaugural Ball gets a boost with an exhibition of works, also known as “trashion“ created by designer Nancy Judd. Her usual garments are created from plastic bags, electrical wire and bubble wrap, but the use of hundreds of discarded Obama campaign posters to create a men’s coat have placed her in the national eye. Judd formed the organization Recycle Runway, which raises environmental consciousness by trashion exhibitions at airports.

An Illinois House of Representatives Committee voted to impeach embattled Governor Rod Blagojevich for his alleged attempt to sell President-elect Obama’s now vacant Senate seat. The next step is a Senate trial impeachment trial where a 2/3 vote is needed to oust the governor.
