Digital Delay
January 19, 2009
For months broadcasters have promoted a nation-wide television signal switch from analog to digital. The approximately 70 million people who do not own digital-ready televisions must acquire a converter box prior to the February 17, 2009 switch. The government set aside $1.34 billion to offer $40 vouchers to offset the purchase of the device–ranging in price from $40 to $70. Earlier this month the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced it ran out of money and is placing people on a voucher waiting list. Lawmakers are talking about delaying the signal change until June 2009.
